Singing bird of the Sami was honoured

Mari Boine was honoured Thursday evening with the «Anders Jahres kulturpris 2009», and the singing bird of Sápmi was honoured as a signpost for the Sami music in one sigh.

– You have shown the way in a new musical landscape and are an example and source for inspiration. You are an invincible force centre and a great artist in continuous development, the former culture minister Åse Kleveland said in her speech for Boine.

Kleveland says that Mari Boine's singing and joik have contributed to the benefit of the community for Sápmi. – With revealing music and newly creating contributions Mari has reached a large audience and that has also been of importance to the community.

– You have made a difference, and by your texts contributed to the showing of the injustice to which the Sami people were exposed, and you have given hope and shown the way. Ole Henrik Magga once said that what he could say in speeches and decrees, Mari could say with her singing, Kleveland said more.
