«Cuovgga Áirras/Sterna Paradisea»
Artist: Mari Boine
Record company: Lean/Universal
ALBUM: One can praise Mari Boine as much as one wants for her boundlessness and openness. But her force lies in how she uses her Sami origin and her round-the-world-ticket, how effortless she mixes and moulds raw material. «Sterna Paradisea» would be her «Graceland». If the goal was to have a studio residence in South-Africa and to let local musicians lend colour to the completed result, she did it, on the understanding that it has become a CD that only highlights how clever she is in the mixing, the tearing apart, the combining and the bringing forward/setting to the background of elements in her music. And she is still an exceptional singer — when will Röyksopp use her for some of the dark/gruesome songs that they tend to give to Karin Drejer?
«Sterna Paradisea» has become something in the spirit of a pop-CD: inviting and longing, easy to follow, with soft Nordic jazz tunings like softening and effective rhythms that move from hifi-friendly jingling to full-blooded Afro-funk. Boine impresses here most because she controls her own musical trademark with a smile around her lips.
Mari Boine has an iron supervision — and she knows it.
